Heading Tags…What is your thoughts?

Posted under Accessibility Resource & Accessibility and JAWS & Legal & Policy & WCAG
Written by: Jeff Singleton

There are apparently two schools of thought on how heading tags should be used on a web page. Some say that you should properly nest them (e.g., h1 followed by h2, h2 followed by h2 or h3, h3 followed by h3 or h4, etc.). For others, the proper nesting of heading tags is not so [...]

House Bill 6305: ATM Visually Impaired-Friendly Act

Posted under Accessibility in the News & Legal & Policy
Written by: Mike Adams

While this may not be of much use to our development followers I am very intrigued by this push for new standards in a way that can obviously benefit many.  It really isn’t a secret that many of us no longer rely on going into a bank and utilizing the tellers.  Direct deposits, automatic bill [...]

Is the new CKEditor accessible?

Posted under Accessibility and JAWS & Accessibility in the News & Developer & Development & Internet Explorer & Keyboard Shortcuts & Legal & Policy & Testing & WCAG & section 508
Written by: Jeff Singleton

The CKEditor is the newest release of the popular open source web page text editor formally known as the FCKEditor. Unfortunately the previous name was often misrepresented as the [bad word] editor. So the name has been updated and hopefully this will avoid any unpleasant or offensive connections in the future.
I first became aware of [...]

New York Requires WCAG 2.0– 3 Legal Take Away Messages

Posted under Legal & Policy
Written by: Ken Nakata

Earlier today, my friend Lainey Feingold put up a great blog post about a comprehensive web accessibility settlement agreement involving the New York State Attorney General’s Office.  The settlement agreement involves HSBC Card Services.  The settlement agreement requires, among other things, that HSBC make its website conform to WCAG 2.0, level AA.
This isn’t the first time that [...]

HSBC & Accessibility

Posted under Accessibility in the News & Legal & Policy

I stumbled across a very important post in the accessibility world yesterday.  As Attorney General Cuomo secured a nationwide agreement with HSBC which basically came under fire as their services weren’t fully accessible to those with disabilities.  A blind customer in this case was attempting to dispute a credit card transaction and was repeatedly told [...]

Compliancy vs. Usability

Posted under Legal & Policy & Testing
Written by: Jeff Singleton

Many times great effort and resource is put into making sure that a site is compliant with Section 508 or the WCAG requirements. All the ALT text is in place, input fields have labels, headings and page titles are used, etc. Everything is set and ready to go…at least from a technical standpoint.
What often gets [...]

Section 508 1194.22 Guidelines

Posted under 1194.22 & Legal & Policy & section 508
Written by: Mike Adams

I hadn’t really thought about it but our posts focus on a lot of specific accessibility issues.  That being said we haven’t gotten too deep into the conception of accessibility and the guidelines, rules and/or regulations themselves.
I thought maybe it was a good time to put up a few posts that just lay out some [...]

Web Accessibility: Unruh and ADA Title III

Posted under Legal & Policy
Written by: Ken Nakata

I’ve stopped babbling about techno stuff and going back to what I do best– being a legal policy wonk on IT accessibility.  In a previous post, I blogged about the Target suit and promised I’d get back to it.  Well, I still haven’t had a chance to really focus on that, but one point that [...]

When I awoke this morning, a colleague of mine from the east coast called to tell me incredible news– the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) settled their long-standing lawsuit against Target Corporation for its inaccessible website for over $6 million!  This is really big news that ends two and a half years of bitter [...]
